The Tour des Combins (TDC) is a trek known for its stunning scenery, challenging trails, and unforgettable experiences in the heart of the Alps. Recently, one of our team members took on this adventure, and we sat down to hear about their journey. From awe-inspiring glacier views to close encounters with local wildlife, this interview offers a glimpse into the beauty and rewards of the trek. Whether you’re considering the TDC for your next adventure or just curious about what it’s like, read on for an inside look at this incredible journey.

What was your overall experience of the Tour des Combins

It was amazing! The TDC is packed with stunning views and also quite the physical challenge. There were so many unforgettable moments, it’s hard to pick just a few.

What were some of your highlights along the route?

Reaching the top of Col des Avouillons after a long, hot climb was one of the most memorable moments – seeing the Corbassière glacier made all the effort worth it. Another highlight was the final day, having lunch with panoramic views of Mont Blanc and Val Ferret. The weather was perfect, and the scenery was unbelievable. We also encountered wildlife, like marmots during the climb from Mauvoisin, and visiting the St. Bernard dogs was a special experience – I had a room overlooking them, which was a real treat!

Were there any parts of the trek that you found particularly challenging?

The climb to Col des Avouillons was tough, especially in the heat. Pacing myself and staying motivated by the thought of the glacier view really helped. Another challenge was walking along the bisse to Champillon. We had to push through overgrown vegetation for about 5 kilometers, but the group’s motivation and camaraderie kept us going – plus, knowing a cold beer was waiting at the end of the day didn’t hurt!

The landscapes on the Tour des Combins are incredible. What was your favorite moment?

The view from Col des Avouillons after that climb was breathtaking. Another standout was the perfect day overlooking Mont Blanc – it felt like everywhere we turned, there was something new and beautiful to see. The variety of landscapes, from glaciers to lush valleys, was truly stunning.

How was the camaraderie among the group during the trek?

The group dynamic was great! We got along really well, especially considering the close dorm-style accommodations. There was a shared goal that united us, and everyone brought interesting knowledge about geology, flora, and fauna, so we all learned from each other. Our guide, Arno, also added a lot with his stories about the area’s history.

How does the Tour des Combins compare to the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB)?

I haven’t done the TMB myself, but others in the group who had said they preferred the TDC. It’s less crowded and has a wonderful sense of remoteness. Without access to shops or luggage transfers, the trek felt more challenging and rewarding. It makes you appreciate completing the journey even more.

Did you experience any local culture or traditions along the way?

Yes, staying at the monastery on Col St. Bernard was a standout cultural experience. The monastery is still functioning, and some of the group attended morning prayers, which was fascinating to witness. Staying in such a historic place added a lot to the trek.

How was the food in the mountain huts?

The food was fantastic! Despite the remoteness, the huts catered to a variety of dietary needs. I’m still dreaming about the brownie at Cabane De Mille. The meatball and couscous dish at Panossière Hut was another favorite. The classic hut soups at the start of each meal were a nice touch. The only downside was the picnic lunches – the bread wasn’t as fresh as it would be in the valley, but that’s to be expected in such remote areas.

What advice would you give to someone considering the Tour des Combins?

Practice hiking with a full rucksack on varied terrain for multiple days – it really helps prepare you for the challenge. The TDC is an advanced trek, so being in good shape is key. And bring trekking poles! They were essential for those long descents – I can’t imagine doing it without them.

How did completing the route influence your perspective on outdoor adventures?

It reinforced my love for point-to-point treks, especially those with minimal environmental impact. We were able to enjoy the stunning landscapes without leaving a trace, which is something I really value.

Closing thoughts

The Tour des Combins is an unforgettable adventure, blending physical challenge with cultural experiences and great camaraderie. From overcoming tough climbs to sharing moments with fellow trekkers, it’s a journey that leaves a lasting impact. If you’re looking for a rewarding trek with a sense of remoteness and accomplishment, the Tour des Combins is a perfect choice for your next adventure.
