I have just returned from one of my favorite places on this planet. What better way to end the winter season than to enjoy touring through the remote and seemingly endless hills and mountains of Norway.

I was inKvitåvatn where we spend several weeks every winter.  It is a valley where skiers from all backgrounds (be it nordic track skiing, alpine or telemark) have an opportunity to come together and learn new skills, enhance old skills, and then put them all together by going on a traditional hut to hut tour on part of the Hardangervidda Plateau.

Unforgettable adventures in norway

Our week long trip atKvitåvatn is designed to help 'track' skiers make the move to 'off-track'.  This adventure on Nordic skis explores a wilderness carved by glaciers, across frozen lakes, and wide open spaces where the reindeer roam. This is an ideal opportunity to develop your off-track ski skills with a view to more ambitious hut-to-hut tours elsewhere in Norway.

We start this trip in Kvitåvatn simply because it has everything we need for the perfect 'off track' touring skills week. Kvitåvatn is a mountain plateau of outstanding natural beauty, with a stunning view of the highest mountain in southern Norway, Gaustatoppen (1883m / 6177ft) and Lake Kvitåvatn.

After three days of skills based tuition and short tours, travel down the valley to Rjukan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for the heavy water sabotages during World War II. From here we take the Krossobanen cable car to access the Hardangervidda National Park, Europe’s largest mountain plateau, for three-days 'off track' touring skiing point-to-point staying over night at the unmanned DNT Helberg Hutte and onto the Rjukan Fjellstue where we learn all about the Norwegian resistance fighters.

I do love the Alps but when you step away from the norm once in a while you are reminded of how beautiful the world is. If you are already a skier and would like to experience a wild, remote, country on skis then perhaps Norway is for you - utter bliss in my book!

Join us in Norway one on of our ever popular Norwegian cross country skiing trips - aimed at everyone from first timers through to advanced skiers looking for an 'off the beaten track' adventure.
