If that sounds like you, don't worry—we believe anyone can enjoy trail running. We've compiled a list of ten trails to inspire you, perfect for all levels. Whether you're transitioning from road running or looking to explore new routes, these trails will help you discover your potential and the beauty of Chamonix.

Do I need to be an experienced runner to run in Chamonix? 

Fortunately, the answer is no—you don't need to be an experienced runner to enjoy trail running in Chamonix. The valley features trails suited for all skill levels, ranging from beginners to advanced runners. 

 

What trails can I run in Chamonix, France?

Chamonix offers a variety of trails surrounded by some of the most breathtaking mountain scenery in the world. The views of the Mont Blanc massif, lush valleys, and alpine meadows provide an unparalleled backdrop for your runs. Here are some suggested trails where you can find the perfect route for your experience level:

 

Easy runs:

 

1. Petit Balcon Nord

  • Description: The Petit Balcon Nord trail winds from the valley floor through dense forests, providing spectacular views of the Aiguillette Rouges. The trail itself is non-technical, making it accessible for a range of runners looking to enjoy the natural beauty without a difficult climb. It ends in Argentière, where you can enjoy excellent croissants at the local bakery, L'Al'pain. Simply take the bus back to Chamonix.

2. The River Run

  • Description: The River Run is a popular trail that follows the Arve River through the scenic Chamonix valley. This route features non-technical and flat terrain, making it the easiest path in the valley. It's perfect for those seeking a relaxing run or walk alongside beautiful river views.
  • Distance: Approximately 8-10 km (loop)
  • Elevation Gain: Minimal, generally less than 100 meters

3. Argentière - Tré le Champ

  • Description: You can take the bus or train to start this loop in Argentière. This route takes you through a lush forest path to the valley's highest village, surrounded by diverse flora and fauna. The terrain includes a challenging climb that rewards with stunning views, making the effort worthwhile. You can end the route with a refreshing drink in this town.
  • Distance: 9km (loop)

4. Parc Merlet

    • Description: This loop goes through forest paths and gravel trails, providing stunning views of the surrounding mountain peaks. If you prefer a point-to-point run, you can finish in Les Houches and take the bus back. This route combines scenic beauty with convenient access, making it an ideal choice for an invigorating run.
    • Distance: 16 km (Loop)

5. Aiguillette des Posettes

    • Description: Starting at Le Tour, where you can take the train, this loop offers panoramic views of the Mont Blanc massif and the Chamonix valley. Situated at the highest end of the valley, this route rewards runners with breathtaking vistas when running on the Possettes ridge. The trail is slightly technical but well worth the effort.

6. Refuge de Loriaz

    • Description: Starting in Le Buet or Vallorcine, this point-to-point trail is accessible by train. It takes you through serene forest paths to a charming mountain refuge, offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Ideal for those seeking a peaceful run with rewarding scenery, the moderate ascent adds a bit of challenge, but the breathtaking landscape at the top makes it worthwhile.

7. La Jonction

    • Description: Starting in Les Bossons, you can take the train or bus to the trailhead. The run up to La Jonction is a demanding route, akin to a vertical kilometer and a half, offering an alternative to the regular VK in Chamonix. This challenging ascent rewards with stunning glacier views, perfect for those seeking a rigorous workout. The effort is well worth the incredible vistas at the top.

10. Bellachat - Aiguillette des Houches

    • Description: The famous zigzag climb to Bellachat onto the Aiguillette des Houches offers panoramic views of the Mont Blanc range and surrounding valleys. You can enjoy a refreshing drink at the Refuge Bellachat during the summer season before continuing onto the Aiguillette des Houches. This route combines a challenging ascent with stunning scenery, making the effort well worth it.
