The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) is a must-do for anyone curious about experiencing the magic of the Alps. Whether you're unsure about the full distance or looking for a tailored experience, there’s an option for you!

Why Hike the Tour du Mont Blanc?

A Unique Trek Through Alpine History and Culture

The Tour du Mont Blanc (also known as the 'TMB') is one of the world’s greatest trekking routes, spanning 166km (104 miles) with approximately 10,000 meters (32,800 feet) of elevation gain. It's usually walked in an anti-clockwise direction through three alpine countries (France, Italy and Switzerland) each offering its own culture, cuisine, and breathtaking landscapes. What more does any hiker need?

Mont Blanc, at 4,810 meters (15,781 feet), is the highest peak in Western Europe and has long been a magnet for adventurers. The trek’s origins date back to the late 18th century when Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, a Swiss geologist and explorer, offered a reward for the first successful ascent of Mont Blanc. This event sparked a fascination with the region, leading to the birth of modern mountaineering.

By the mid-20th century, the idea of circumnavigating Mont Blanc on foot became popular among hikers, with official routes and refuges established to support multi-day treks. Today, the TMB is a well established route with optional variations along the way drawing trekkers from around the world eager to experience its diverse landscapes, cultural richness, and historical significance.

Chamonix, often considered the mountaineering capital of the world, sits at the foot of Mont Blanc and serves as a gateway to this incredible adventure. With glaciers, alpine meadows, and rugged passes, the scenery is as diverse as it is stunning.

Along the way, you'll encounter charming alpine villages, historic refuges, and awe-inspiring glaciers, making this trek as culturally enriching as it is physically rewarding.

When is the best time to hike The Tour du Mont-Blanc?
June to September. We recommend times when the flowers are in full bloom, the crowds are smaller, and the trails are free of snow. Late June and early July offer spectacular wildflower displays, while September provides crisp air, fewer hikers, and vibrant autumn colours.

Whether you are an experienced hiker or just beginning your alpine adventures, there is a suitable itinerary to match your skill level and preferences.

How long does it take to hike the TMB?
Anywhere from one week to 12 days, depending on the route and pace you choose. Some prefer a steady and immersive journey, while others opt for a more challenging, faster-paced itinerary covering longer daily distances.

What kind of accommodation is available?
Choose from family-run hotels, cozy auberges, or mountain huts for a truly immersive Alpine experience. Mountain huts offer a rustic yet authentic overnight stay with communal dining and stunning high-altitude locations, while auberges and hotels provide additional comfort, privacy, and local hospitality.
